Subconscious mind: can I control my own decisions?

The subconscious mind is the place where all our memories are stored. These memories, set deep in our subconscious, become the set of rules that guide our conscious decisions in the future. We need to understand this part of the mind to better comprehend why it seems so difficult to implement fundamental changes in our lives. In order to succeed in whatever it is that we chase, we will have to hack our subconscious to start making the choices we want instead of choices that just keep us safe because there is no real progression in there.

If you don’t have much time today I hope you have enjoyed this previous summary we have prepared for you. On the other hand, if you want to learn more I recommend you to read the rest of the article. What is the subconscious mind?

Have you ever felt like you have been living your life on auto-pilot? That you basically live the same day each and every day? Our subconscious mind could be compared to the auto-pilot feature. It has been programmed to follow a specific route and it doesn’t deviate from that route unless the programming is changed. As you know by now it works like any other software based on a very specific set of rules!!!

The subconscious mind regulates our bodily functions such as our heartbeat and breathing. But our subconscious mind doesn’t just regulate our bodily functions, it also tries to regulate and keep in homeostasis our mental self. Our conscious minds receive new information and thoughts, and our subconscious mind filters this information with our preexisting beliefs (formed in childhood) and sends back to us repeated thoughts and impulses that we’ve already experienced in the past.

In fact, it stores our beliefs, our previous experiences, and our memories. Our subconscious minds are extremely powerful and control much of what we do – from our daily morning routines, to how we react to particular situations to even influence the amount of money we earn (as surprising as it can sound to you, our subconscious has a big impact on every aspect of our performances).

Operating Below the Conscious

The word subconscious means “below consciousness,” and it is just that. Basically, it is the part of the mind that operates below our level of waking consciousness. Wonder why so many successful athletes – take Serena Williams as an example – tell the stories of the countless hours they used to drill a move when they were kids? What are those coaches trying to do? The idea is to implement the mechanics of the move at a subconscious level so the athlete can have a use of it under any circumstance without having to even think of how to.

Reading this article is you using your conscious mind to read and analyze these words, but our subconscious mind is also reading this article. It is the part that is taking in all this information and either accepting or rejecting it based on the current view that you have of the world which was most likely formed in childhood.

When we are babies, we do not have any pre-existing beliefs or pre-existing conditioning. Basically, we are a clean slate and for the most part, we accept all the information we received to be as true…If your mom called you beautiful and smart, you believed it to be true. If you were told you were useless and not as smart as your brother or sister, you believed it was true and your subconscious mind stored all these experiences.  All this information we start absorbing before we are born, and it prolongs until we are 7 to 8 years of age and forms what is known as our Identity.

Forming the identity

Childhood experiences lay the foundation of who we are. Here lies the importance on how we speak to our kids so they can grow to their full potential. Why do so many people end up in the same social class as their parents? Why is so similar the way coaches and parents talk to their kids all over the world who end up being champions on their sports?  Why in certain areas is poverty passed on through generations? All these messages that are absorbed and stored in our subconscious helped to create a strong groundwork of our belief system.

Take a moment to reflect on other situations where your subconscious mind has limited you and held you back from some great opportunities. Remember how you felt? Do you recall what you did about it? If the outcome was not the desired one, I want you to be honest and ask yourself if right now you have the tools to act differently if the same situation presents itself…

Is it time to change this and up-level your life!?

How does our programming affect us in the present?

I’m sure that by this point (excuse to all my readers that already researched this topic in the past), you are realizing how important all the information received during our childhood is to understand who we are today. These experiences are stored in our subconscious minds forming the core of who we are and how we are being in the world.

Have you ever been rejected by someone (professionally or personally) and immediately upon the rejection you likely felt sad, disappointed, or angry? Meanwhile your subconscious mind is analyzing all your past experiences and memories of rejection – like that one time when your best friend blew you off to hang out with the “cool” crowd- and then you reach the conclusion that the reason you were rejected this time in the present is because you’re not good enough and you somehow deserve this rejection.

Maya Angelou Quote

The way we are wired is so powerful that we don’t really become aware of it until we try to take action but come across as limitations or keep staying in homeostasis and consequently we never really up-level in areas of our life. I know it might sound discouraging but the moment I understood this was the moment I understood why substantial changes that I wanted to implement in my life were much more complicated than simply wanting to do them. To find a solution, we need to find a diagnosis and now we finally have it. The answer is simple and, as you imagine by now, is: The Subconscious Mind!

Speaking the language of the subconscious mind

So, what can we do if our own sabotage comes from so deep inside? We have no answer but to hack our own subconscious mind. Reprograming our subconscious mind is not an easy task since it attacks the deepest core of our beliefs system. It is not simply a matter of being mindful of our thoughts or reading positive affirmations and hoping that with consistency that our subconscious will change (if you have ever battled with any form of addiction you already know this better than anyone)! We don’t reprogram our brain through thoughts or affirming: “I am a millionaire.” We reprogram our subconscious brain through feeling, which is a right brain response.

Reprograming the subconscious mind

To understand how to hack the mind we must speak the language of the subconscious mind. If we don’t speak properly to the subconscious mind it is not going to understand us. Have you ever seen an American speaking to a foreigner in English and they speak loud and slowly thinking it will be understood when the other person does not speak a word of English? This is the kind of problem most people (myself included, until I learned how to reprogram my subconscious mind) have every time they want to change a habit that is deeply embedded in the subconscious.

Knowing why we are the way we are and learning the language of the subconscious mind is key to reaching new and high levels in our lives. We have only touched on the tip of the iceberg regarding the subconscious mind. In the following articles we will continue to dive even deeper and uncover more powerful ways to use our subconscious minds and maximize our potentials.
