Beating food addictions in 3 steps

In today’s world lots of us deal with anxiety. A frequent coping mechanism is overeating. The issues we have with food lay on the subconscious mind. We form our behaviors and habits in childhood and still as adults have these behaviors. The main reason why people can’t beat food addictions is because they haven’t reprogrammed themselves. You can’t expect different outcomes just by giving yourself positive affirmations about your body, food, and eating healthy. If you want to beat food addictions you need to follow 3 simple steps:

  1. Awareness.
  2. Positive self-talk.
  3. The Be-Do-Have formula.

Have you ever felt addicted to a particular food? Have you repeatedly tried to lose weight but fall victim to the yo-yo affect (you lose, then gain, and then lose again)? In this scenario is not your diet that’s wrong, it’s your thoughts and beliefs that lie deep within the subconscious mind. That excess weight, that constant craving, or that unconscious reach for Coca-Cola is actually just a reflection of your subconscious mind.

Lots of us are ridden with anxiety in today’s fast paced world. Everyone have their ways to cope with anxiety. A frequent coping mechanism is eating or overheating. We may attribute our issues with food to outside problems. But ultimately, the reason why we are the way we are lies in the subconscious mind. The principle reason why people have food addictions and can’t consistently keep the weight off is because they don’t reprogram their subconscious mind. If you consciously make goals but have your identity as someone else, it is difficult to make any real transformation.

Origins of food addictions

Our subconscious mind is running the show. Ezequiel Morsella and his team conducted a study and found out that the unconscious mind is really in charge. It is difficult to completely measure, but it’s estimated that the subconscious mind is responsible for 95-99% of our programming.

Our subconscious minds are used to our habitual activities. For example, when we drive, we know to stop at red lights and go on green lights. We aren’t thinking about how to drive and what we should do. It comes second nature to us. The same is true for our eating behaviors. When we go grocery shopping, we buy the food that we normally do. When we go out to eat, we order similar foods to what we’ve had previously. If you habitually order fried food, it’s likely you will order some fried food. If you are used to vegetables and fresh food, you will likely order something similar because that is what your body is used to. It is how you have programmed your mind that affects your choices.

Food habits and the subconscious mind

The subconscious mind is formed through habits and innate behaviors. For most of us (unless we have worked consciously on subconscious reprogramming), we formed our behaviors and habits in childhood and still as adults have these behaviors. Our subconscious brain is located in the reptilian part of brain, the part connected with the fight or flight mechanism. Thousands of years ago, the reptilian brain associated food with survival and focused on obtaining food that would give us plenty of energy and help us to survive as we didn’t know when we would have access to food again.

In addition to our survival mechanism, we also have other limiting beliefs such as a fear of failure or fear of rejection. For example, we may subconsciously think that if we lose the weight and then don’t achieve something or find a partner that we are failures. The main point here is there are always inner issues at play that are affecting our external world.

So, subconsciously, when we decide what we should eat there is part of an ancient survival mechanism at play as well as our habits and conditioning that happened in childhood. When we are working long hours and realize that we are hungry, some fried food like chicken fingers may come to mind. It’s filling, we loved them as a kid, and they’re easily accessible as almost every restaurant has chicken fingers on their menu. Or if you have conditioned your brain to.

Dr. Bruce Lipton stated in his book, The Biology of Belief, that the subconscious mind processes some 20,000,000 stimuli per second while the conscious mind process 40 per second. That’s quite a staggering figure. And if we really think about it, it makes sense. The popular book, The Secret, is right that you can attract anything that you want into your life, including a new relationship with food and consequently a better body image and newfound self-esteem. However, you can’t just say things, think positively and expect change. This is like putting a Band-Aid on a wound that needs stitches.

This is exactly why you can’t just tell yourself you are going to eat differently. Or give yourself positive affirmations about your body, food, and eating healthy and expect different outcomes. While I am all about positive thinking and think it is a necessary part in transformation,  it is clear that for profound change to occur, first the subconscious needs to be reprogrammed.

If you have some type of food addiction or some unhealthy relationship with food it could be useful to take a look at your subconscious mind and follow 3 simple steps:

  1. Awareness: The first step is to become aware that there is some deep conditioning that occurred that makes you the way you are (your emotions, behaviors, beliefs, values etc.) and then try to pinpoint the subconscious glitch that changed your blueprint of health.
  2. Positive self-talk: Listen to how you talk to yourself. If you are consistently telling yourself that you are fat or are disgusted by what you see in the mirror, it is going to make it really difficult to stop your food addictions. If you have been talking to yourself like this for years, it has most definitely imprinted on your subconscious mind and it is time to make a change. Start talking to yourself in a loving way, like how you would talk to a small, innocent child. There are great things your body has done for you over the years. Practice loving self-talk every day. The language of the subconscious mind is emotions, feelings, images and reinforced through repetition. Eventually, your subconscious mind will align with your conscious desire.
  3. Apply Be-Do-Have formula: You can’t simply do things differently. You have to start being differently first. When you be different, you do things differently, and you will have what you want. The B-D-H formula is powerful and is our philosophy for helping to make subconscious shifts and transform the mind. If you want to stop any food addiction that you may have ask yourself what must you believe about yourself to stop the addiction. What should your relationship with food be like? What kind of person do you need to be to have a healthy food relationship? Then be that person.

Any form of addiction that we project externally is a result of our internal programming. For transformation to occur, we must make changes at the subconscious level. This means changing the identity of who we are in order to become the person that we dream to be. Remember that you only create in life that which you are.
